About Marc Shmuger

Marc ShmugerOver three decades, Marc Shmuger has built a distinguished career as a film industry executive and producer. He is currently chief executive of Global Produce, a film and television production company that he founded in 2011.

Global Produce’s first two productions, the feature documentary We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks and the independent feature film The Spectacular Now, were released in 2013 to considerable critical acclaim. We Steal Secrets premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, received nominations from BAFTA, WGA, and IDA, and won the Producers Guild of America’s highest honor for Best Documentary of the Year. The Spectacular Now also premiered at Sundance in 2013, where it received a special acting award, and the film was recognized by the National Board of Review as one of the Top 10 Independent Films of 2013.

Shmuger spent the early years of his career with Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he ran the creative advertising department and later served as executive vice president of marketing. At Sony, he created marketing campaigns for such films as Groundhog Day, Air Force One, In the Line of Fire, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Men in Black.

After Sony, Shmuger joined Universal Pictures where he became president of marketing, then vice chairman and eventually chairman of the studio. Under his leadership, Universal delivered record profitability while producing movies widely recognized for their quality and critical acclaim. Films he greenlit and distributed were honored with 54 Oscar nominations, 78 BAFTA nominations, and 45 Golden Globe nominations.

Shmuger is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and formerly served on the Board for The American Film Institute. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University.
